MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING FOR DIAGNOSTIC PURPOSES:

Your doctor has requested you have an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for diagnostic purposes. An MRI will help your doctor see inside your body and look for abnormalities or diseases. MRI is a non invasive means for diagnosis that does not use radiation like CT Scans and XRay. MRI is a superior technology that results in very clear pictures of the skeletal system, internal body organs and other soft tissue.

Every year, over 10 million patients have MRI examinations. MRI is an extremely safe procedure as long as proper safety precautions are taken. Typically, an MRI will produce no pain and causes no known short or long term tissue damage.

THE PROCEDURE:

You will be led into the exam room by our staff technician and placed on the examining table. You may bring a loved one or companion with you into the exam room provided they too are not wearing any metallic objects on their bodies or clothing. You must remain completely still during the procedure and cannot speak with your companion. However, your loved one or companion may bring a book or magazine to read to you.

Your physician may have requested the use of contrasting agents during the procedure. If so, they will be administered by the staff technician. If you are given a contrasting agent, it will pass naturally through your body within a day.

Some patients who are extremely claustrophobic may require sedation. If you require a sedative prior to the exam, you must bring a companion or loved one with you as a driver. However, this facility features a Neusoft Super Open MRI and should be much more comfortable than traditional open bore MRI systems.

Your images will be transmitted to an outside Radiologist for reading. A report should be issued to your physician within a few days of the procedure. In addition, we can provide you with a CD Rom of your MRI images upon request or email the images to your physician if you provide us with their email. Your physician should contact you with the results of your MRI.

PREPARING FOR YOUR MRI:

Since the procedure involves the use of a 19 ton magnet and a super charged electromagnetic field, you must remove all metal and magnetic sensitive items from your body. This includes watches, credit and debit cards (whose magnetic stripes can be erased if exposed to the magnetic field), jewelry, hairpins or barrettes. Be sure not to wear makeup that contains magnetic flakes. Prior to the procedure, you will be given a screening questionnaire for any metallic objects on or within your body. In addition, you will be provided with a private and secure changing room and gown to wear during your procedure.
